‘Michael’ (seen here) befriended Martina the nice polish girl downstairs April 2007, around the same time my book ‘The 4th Bomb’ was to be launched at the London Book Fair 2007. He used to laze around her room all day while she went to work (Somerfields supermarket in Old Street, London). For one thing his story didn’t add up.
A well spoken young englishman who’s occupation is a ‘late night mini cab driver’? Doubtful, besides I occupied the room directly above her bedroom and guess what… they’d never had sex!! Despite him spending many nights with the 21 year old blonde.

Then one day I returned home to find 2 copies of ‘The 4th bomb’ final draft missing from my room. I knew that he’d entered my room and stolen them but sensibly I’d hidden extra back-up copies. I went downstairs put my ear to the door and listened, he was in her room. I knocked, but there was no answer. Instead of confronting him there and then I scrawled ‘MI5 DID IT’ on the door. Let that be our little secret! And it was… until Febuary 2008 when I was accused of threatening to murder Martina the polish girl.

Rubbish Spy James John Fry – Aged 45

I could tell this 5’10 blonde haired guy with the sides shorn I stood behind could sense my glare.

I leant forward as he pulled out a mobile watched him send a short text message saying he “was opening a new account at his new branch”. Adding 2 and 2 together I summised that the Holloway branch of the Halifax bank wasn’t his branch (duh).

Next thing you know, the personal banking lady finished helping my dad with his enquiry and it was the surveillance operative’s turn. My dad hobbled on his stick joining the queue to withdraw some cash while I went to wait outside the branch. Peering in the window I noticed the operative sat down and was talking to the personal banking lady, so I came back in to evesdrop on him in order to confirm my suspicions.
She was asking him questions to verify himself. I over heard some of his personal information. When she asked for 2 forms of ID, he’d produced his passport and driver’s licence. They lay on the desk as she typed in his details. I moved closer pretending to browse some leaflets on the wall behind her while I gawped at his details on screen as she entered them on her computer.

His name: Fry… James John Fry – Aged 45!

She asked him his occupation, my ears strained to hear as he lowered his tone but the lady helpfully blabbed, “Oh, that’s something to do with the army isn’t?” It was so funny. I walked off chuckling as my Dad finished at the counter. I’d seen more than enough! These guys really think on their feet!

Intelligence Gathering At The London Bookfair

Things have certainly been intresting since April when I said draft copies of The 4th Bomb would be circulated. The draft has only the first 4 chapters proofread and spell checked but it seems that the MOD have already begun probing.
I was cold-called by an persistant man asking to do a book review and interview. The first time I ended the call as I didn’t know how the caller had got my mobile number. Minutes later he rang again. I answered but it was quite clear that he was not ‘on my side’ as he claimed, in an attempt to reassure me.

Then I was approached at The London Book Fair by a young MI5careers.gov.uk chap, who proceeded to tell me all there was to know about printing and the Internet Advertising, without realising I’d worked in both industries since 1999 when I gained my Masters Degree from the University of The Arts. This pointed to a level of intelligence the M.O.D is acting upon. The young intelligence officer bounded up to my kiosk with a glint in his eye. He sat down, gave his name as Jacobs and offered me his card. I flipped through his sample books. ‘Good quality, printed in India, it keeps costs down you know’, he said. When I pointed out that one of the books was in Hindi he nodded eagerly. So you understand Hindi then? I asked. Yes, he replied. Right I said, turning to the first chapter. I pointed to the numeral at the foot of the page and asked him what number it was. He was totally stumped, the idiot did not have a clue. After an embarrassing silence he began scribbling on a piece of paper and calculating quantities and the various special discounts he could offer me.

Though he was a buffoon I needed to step things up. Instead of printing 30 draft copies I printed 300, this was largely for the M.O.D types that would no doubt be increasingly in attendence. The sale of the drafts funded the first edition proper (1000 copies plus marketing material).
