Commander Simon O'Brien - In Charge

On April 1st 2009 newspaper vendor Ian Tomlinson aged 47 ended up in the news. He died attempting to reach Monument station on his way home from work. Moments before he’d been struck with a baton and felled by riot police patrolling the G20 protests at the Bank of England.
Commander O’Brien convieniently missed out the fact that a man lay dead when summarising his mens handling of the days protests in an interview soon after, telling reporters he was satisfied his men had done a good job.

I was there and witnessed how peaceful protesters were shoved and threatened with brutality by riot police. We have to thank the ‘criminals’ with cameras that day who took footage of their disgraceful conduct in spite of the draconian Section 76 law recently passed for just such circumstances.
As more and more footage of the unwarranted attack on Mr Tomlinson is released Police Commander Simon O’Brien remains unavailable for comment.das_jackboot2

  1. Saw and heard you at the Ian Tomlinson Memorial. Were you really at the protest rally on April 1st??

    • Yes I was in the thick of it! I took the above picture 45 minutes before I was taken to a police van.
It was parked in a backstreet near the Royal Bank of Scotland that had its windows smashed.

I ended up there after they begun ‘kettling’ us. I got pushed further and further back and was a bit too close to the line of riot police when an anarchist hurled a bottle at them. Unfortunately my hand and face sustained cuts from flying glass deflected off a riot policeman’s shield.

I was told to wait in the van for an ambulance to arrive but shortly after it showed up the medics got called away to tend to a man who’d collapsed. I later learned this mans name was Ian Tomlinson.

  2. Who is Ian Rowlinson?
